Promoting Evidence-Based Childhood Health Behavior in Singapore

Promote your kids health via Singapore new checklist

At MEIDE Babysitting, we understand that nurturing healthy habits from a young age is pivotal for kids’ overall development, childhood health, and well-being.

Have you heard about the latest improvements to our national childhood screening regime?

Let us walk you through it right here, right now.

What is Childhood Health Behavior?

Briefly, this is a new and vital section to our existing health booklet that all Singapore babies get at birth! The health booklet is utilized by doctors, parents and guardians throughout kidsโ€™ development journey.

At its โ€˜first editionโ€™, this addendum comprises 16 pages, with 7 touchpoints, namely at 4-8 weeks, 3-5 months, 6 months, 12 months, 15-22 months, 24-36 months, and lastly at 4-6 years old. On top of these, there are QR codes about detailed advice, for each lifestyle domain, after each touchpoint. However, do expect these to be tweaked over time!

Before we begin, youโ€™d be glad to know that our professional nannies adhere to evidence-based practices that align with the latest guidelines from Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) and HealthHub. These practices are further supported by international research from countries like the UK and the US too.

In essence, there are 6 key points to take away from these applauded additions in Singapore’sโ€™ Childhood Health Behaviors Checklist.

1. Balanced Nutrition

Nutrition is essential for childhood health always

First and foremost, MOH wants parents and caregivers to be mindful of nutrition!

Indeed, a nutritious diet is fundamental to a child’s growth and development. Recent studies have highlighted the significance of early dietary habits:

  • Sugar Intake: Research indicates that limiting sugar consumption during the first 1,000 days of life can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure in later years. One study analyzing historical data from the UK found that early-life sugar rationing led to a 35% reduction in diabetes risk and a 20% decrease in hypertension.
  • Fish Consumption: Incorporating fish into children’s diets has been associated with improved behavior and sociability. This UK study revealed that children who consumed fish regularly exhibited better social behaviors compared to those who didn’t. The nutrients in fish, such as omega-3 fatty acids, play a crucial role in brain development.

At MEIDE, our nannies are trained to prepare balanced meals that emphasize whole foods, ensuring children receive essential nutrients while minimizing added sugars.

2. Safe Sleep Practices

Next, ensuring safe sleep environments is vital in reducing risks such as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The “Safe to Sleep” campaign, formerly known as “Back to Sleep,” has been instrumental in educating caregivers about placing infants on their backs to sleep, leading to a significant decline in SIDS cases.

  • At MEIDE Babysitting, we prioritize safe sleep protocols by:
  • Placing infants on their backs during sleep.
  • Using firm mattresses without soft bedding.
  • Keeping the sleep environment free from toys and loose blankets.

3. Encouraging Physical Activity

Thirdly, regular physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy weight and promoting overall well-being. Initiatives like the UK’s “Change4Life” campaign have successfully encouraged families to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routines.

During professional babysitting, rest assured that our caregivers integrate age-appropriate physical activities, such as:

  • Outdoor playtime.
  • Interactive games that promote movement.
  • Structured exercise sessions suitable for children.

4. Limiting Ultra-Processed Foods

Fourthly, back to nutrition. Yes, high consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has been linked to various health issues, including obesity and chronic diseases. In fact, a study from University College London found that nearly half of toddlers’ calorie intake came from UPFs, emphasizing the need for healthier food choices.

As such, it is crucial for us that our nannies focus on offering natural, minimally processed snacks and meals, such as:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Whole-grain products.
  • Homemade dishes free from artificial additives.

5. Supporting Breastfeeding

Now, letโ€™s not forget all about the gold. Breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition for infants and fosters bonding between mother and child. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) by WHO and UNICEF promotes practices that support breastfeeding, leading to better health outcomes for both infants and mothers.

In line with this, our nannies encourages and supports breastfeeding by:

  • Providing a comfortable environment for nursing mothers.
  • Offering guidance and resources on breastfeeding techniques.
  • Respecting and following each family’s feeding choices and routines.

6. Positive Parenting Practices

Positive parenting is an intriguing topic

Finally, this may be a deep and broad topic, but it is never too late to start. Positive parenting fosters emotional and social development in children. Programs like “Sure Start” in the UK have demonstrated that teaching parenting skills can reduce behavioral problems in young children. In the Childhood Health Behavior checklist, we see items that reinforce the importance of positive parenting.

You can be sure of this. Our nannies are trained to implement positive parenting techniques by:

  • Using praise and incentives to encourage desired behaviors.
  • Building strong, nurturing relationships with children.
  • Setting clear expectations and consistent boundaries.

Moving to 4 Key Domains

We believe that the implementation of the Childhood Health Behaviours Checklist is just the start towards aligning with times. The 6 key take-home messages fit nicely into the newly introduced โ€˜4 Key Domainsโ€ within the checklist.

In time to come, it is anticipated that more details and items would be added and modified within the checklist. They would likely be fitted into these domains:

Here are the four key lifestyle domains from the Childhood Health Behaviours Checklist:

  1. Screen Use: Encouraging purposeful and limited screen time to enhance cognitive and social development.
  2. Sleep: Promoting adequate sleep routines to improve concentration, mood, and physical growth.
  3. Physical Activity: Facilitating regular physical activity to strengthen the body, sharpen the mind, and boost self-esteem.
  4. Nutrition: Ensuring a balanced diet to support growth and enhance overall health.

How We Integrate These Into Babysitting

Do you need to memorise these?

Worrying about training up your helper or nanny now?

Fret not! If you are too busy, our professional nannies are trained to integrate these evidence-based practices into daily routines:

  • Managing Screen Time: We encourage activities that limit screen exposure, such as reading, arts and crafts, and interactive play, fostering creativity and social skills.
  • Establishing Sleep Routines: Our nannies implement consistent bedtime routines, including calming activities like storytelling, to ensure children receive adequate rest.
  • Encouraging Physical Activity: We organize age-appropriate physical activities, such as outdoor play and interactive games, to promote physical health and motor development.
  • Providing Nutritious Meals: Our team emphasizes balanced diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, aligning with recommendations to reduce sugar intake and promote overall health.
